I'm Katharine. I guess you know a little about me or you wouldn't have made it this far.
How this journal works for me: 1. Like many things in my life, this journal suffers from Best Intention SyndromeTM. This is a totally made-up diagnosis, applicable to someone who is well intentioned, but not always able to give everything they might want to give, because they've taken on too much and are are thus spreading themself too thinly. That's often me in life - and the time between updates on my journal can reflect that...
2. I also have a Best Intentioned, slightly dyslexic approach to spelling and grammar. This would be massively improved if I were to, for example, proof entries better before posting them. Okay, let's do a deal... I'll improve, if you'll forgive me when that improvement isn't quite enough to catch all of those errors?
3. Some stuff is private, and thus doesn't make it onto LJ. That's important to remember.
4. Using LJ as a rant space to slag off work, and work colleagues, doesn't suit me. I find it somehow distasteful... and rather unprofessional. So I'm unlikely to do that. However... there are very occasional, rather glorious moments where I break this rule, although they are few and far between. There's something utterly freeing about calling a **** a ****, if that's what they are, but only if you willing to stand behind that comment for a long time. Like forever. So you won't get much of that here.
5. Informal little reviews, and mentions of shows and projects tend to be included on a Best IntentionedTM basis, too. If a show is amazing, I might get it together to mention it here. Equally, if a show is amazing, I might be too busy working on it to write about it here.
Certainly, you are unlikely to get regular Show/Book Of The Week-type posts. I will promise you one thing though, I won't ever 'sell' you a bad 'un. If I'm telling you about a book here, that is because I loved it. If I do an 'advert' type post about a show, then I believe in it. I do still ocasionally pick a show to work on that really doesn't work as a piece of theatre, and I might even tell you about that in a diary post, but what I won't do is try to waste your money and some hours of your life buying tickets and watching it. What would be the point of that?
6. Centre justified text makes me happy. Apologies if it does your head in.
7. We all know that only idiots do those posts where you just quote someone else and don't give any of your own thoughts at all. Sometimes, I am that idiot.
8. Mostly this journal is public, as it exists as a useful way for me to keep in touch with people I care about when I'm in production or on tour, without plaguing some very busy people with emails that they have no time to read! If I've told you about this site, then it means I reckon you're someone who is worth sharing this stuff with. If you've found me through someone else's blog (I know more people are linking to this nowadays) then hello, and welcome to my little world...
9. Comments are always welcome, but I know some of you feel self-conscious about leaving them. If you want, you can email me instead if you want to respond that way. Or you can just read. It's all good.
10. Those of you who are Livejournal people, I'm happy for you to add me to your friends list. I absolutely can't promise to always keep up to date with your journal. I'm particularly awful at that level of organisation when I get busy with a show. But I do promise to drop in sometimes and see how you are. I love commenting on other people's posts... but sometimes get so busy that I don't have time to do so for weeks and month (and never years, but sometimes it feels like that). If you're on my Friends list, I'll be reading your Journal whenever I can... but I do miss things sometimes. Prod me if it's important.
